All systems go for contemporary new accommodation at Callaghan
The Development Approval for the new accommodation precinct offering some 780 additional beds on the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus received the green light today.
In approving and recommending the application, the Joint Regional Planning Panel and the Newcastle City Council considered consistency with the planning regulations, best practice guidelines, student benefit, the architectural character and physical level of amenity for future residents.
Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Services), Mr Trevor Gerdsen, said the approval was a major milestone in the university’s drive to deliver more high quality on campus accommodation for students.
“For many years, demand for on-campus accommodation has outstripped supply. The new accommodation will bring the total number of beds on campus to 1700,” he said.
“Through this development, our aim is to provide an affordable, vibrant and contemporary accommodation precinct that will support our students to thrive in their studies and socially.”
The development comprises four eight storey towers clustered around social spaces that include a cafe, recreation spaces and student facilities such as group study areas, games rooms and common areas for dining, live music and cinema.
“Getting the design of the precinct right has been the most important factor,” Mr Gerdsen said.
“We have balanced the need to provide a contemporary, vital space for our students with a design that minimises our footprint and is sensitive to our bushland setting.
“The result is impressive. The clever design offers a blend of private and shared spaces, and the amenities for students will be great. The mix of social and private spaces together with a cafe, movie theatre and vegetable gardens delivers accommodation that strikes the perfect balance.”
The development is anticipated to deliver 350 jobs into the local economy during construction, which is due to begin in July 2012. Accommodation will be available to students from 2014.
