Scholarships raise the bar for Port Stephens students

The University of Newcastle is urging Port Stephens students to apply for one of the hundreds of scholarships available to them.

Some of the scholarships on offer are specifically for students located in the Port Stephens area. The Harbourside Haven Retirement Village Undergraduate Scholarship in Nursing is for second and third year students, worth $1,000.

Previous winner Carole Gorman was encouraged to apply for the scholarship while completing a placement as an Assistant in Nursing at Harbourside in the 1980s and went on to lead a successful career in aged care.

Carole, who is now the Care Coordinator for the not for profit organisation’s Bill King Aged Care Facility, said the scholarship was not only financially helpful but that it also played an active role in her future career success.

“While I was studying I had a family to look after so the extra help with expenses such as textbooks took a bit of the pressure off.

“The scholarship also gave me a morale boost because I felt that my efforts had really been recognised and it encouraged me to continue working hard in my degree” she said.

There are more than 200 scholarships on offer to students studying in various degrees at the University which can help relieve the financial burden associated with full time study, particularly for those with family and travel commitments.

University of Newcastle Foundation CEO, Louise O’Connell, said a lot of scholarships were funded by donors who wanted to help students such as Carole succeed in their chosen field.

“There are a lot of people and organisations out there that want to see university students do well in their studies and who realise the associated costs can add considerable pressure.

“I encourage all students attending the University of Newcastle to visit our website and check if you are eligible. Scholarships are such a great opportunity to get a helping hand,” she said.

Students can apply at www.newcastle.edu.au/scholarships.

Applications for most scholarships close on 31 March.
