World-class choir of the year looking for new songbirds

The University of Newcastle’s world champion Chamber Choir is auditioning for new members this month.

The University of Newcastle’s world champion Chamber Choir is auditioning for new members this month.

“Choral singing is ultimately a team effort but also dependent on individual talent,” conductor Phillip Matthais said.

“Our goal is to nurture choristers in a way that enables them to develop their singing talent while contributing to the richness and eloquence of the choir’s sound.”

That sound is internationally recognised - in 2006 the chamber choir won the ABC Classic FM Adult Choir of the Year, in 2008 the Channel Seven Battle of the Choirs winner and in 2010 the choir travelled to China for the World Choir Games where the group won two titles.

The choir is expected to soar to even greater heights this year when the ensemble travels to the USA for the seventh World Choir Games.

Performances in Boston, New York, Washington and Bermuda are also planned for 2012.
