Donation funds research into diabetes
A generous donation of $350,000 to the University of Newcastle will help fund research into the cause and treatment of diabetes.
The donation is a bequest from the late Mr Eric Sansom of Georgetown, who passed away in 2010.
University of Newcastle Foundation Executive Officer, Dr Bernie Curran said Mr Sansom’s son suffered from diabetes and died in 1988.
“Mr Sansom wished to support research into the disease. The funding will go to the Faculty of Health where it will be put towards further research into the care and management of diabetes.
“The University appreciates the support offered by community members such as Mr Sansom and his generosity will go towards much needed diabetes research that we hope will one day make a difference to the lives of others.
“Each of us finds different ways to make our mark on the world. Eric Sansom left his legacy by making this donation in his Will to support something he was passionate about.
Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in Australia and research into better management and treatment is considered a high priority for researchers.
While the disease is currently considered manageable, a cure is yet to be discovered.
Leaving money to support research is just one way a person can leave a legacy. By making a bequest to the University of Newcastle you can also help support students obtain an education through a scholarship and many other University projects that benefit the community.
“Making a bequest to the University of Newcastle and education is not just a gift - it’s an investment in the future,” Dr Curran said.
The Faculty of Health is currently reviewing the research program that best fits the intent of Mr Sansom’s donation.
