Weight loss research aimed at internet generation
University of Newcastle researcher is hoping to harness the power of the internet to help fight one of Australia’s biggest public health issues, obesity.
Dr Melinda Neve is the winner of the new Penn Foundation Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Obesity recently established at the University. The Fellowship provides Dr Neve with $40,000 in funding over two years.
Dr Neve’s research involves assessing the benefits of online weight loss and weight loss maintenance programs for overweight and obese adults.
“Technology has been blamed as a big contributor in the rise of obesity in Australia. We need to find new ways to fight this increasing problem.
“I’m investigating whether online solutions will help the new generation of technology users maintain a healthy lifestyle.
“The research will also look at what improvements can be made to current online weight loss programs in order to make them a more sustainable method of weight loss.
“I’m really honoured to win this prestigious Fellowship. I hope my research will help in assisting other researchers help combat the problem of obesity in our society.”

The Penn Foundation was set up by the Penn family in the 1970s in order to assist community-based projects designed to raise awareness in health and fitness.
