Pharmacy student serves up right medicine
University of Newcastle student Emma Smith is among the top four pharmacy students in Australia, after making the grand final of a national skills competition.
The Master of Pharmacy student competed in the Alphapharm Pharmacy Student of the Year Competition at the National Pharmacy Australia Congress in Melbourne.
She earned her place at the national event by winning the NSW competition, which tested students’ counselling skills using real pharmacy scenarios.
The eight participants in the national final were required to assess patients' health care needs before a panel and audience.
Emma progressed to the grand final with three other students, where they each had to counsel a pregnant woman who wanted to treat a bad cold and cough.
This year’s wildcard entry, Ezekiel (Zeke) Steindl, was named the national winner.
The Alphapharm Pharmacy Student of the Year Awards were launched in 2004, and are now an undisputed highlight of the annual Pharmacy Australia Congress.
