More than 100 higher education delegates from the nation’s leading institutions will arrive in Newcastle this week for inaugural discussions on the international student experience.

The University of Newcastle will host the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) conference from 8-9 September.

Under the theme ‘Shaping the International Student Experience', the conference program includes examples of best practice in international student support, the latest findings from the International Education Resource Centre and the University of Newcastle’s experience of ESOS.

Keynote speaker, University of Newcastle Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Global Relations), Professor Kevin McConkey, said sharing ideas and setting national consistencies in approach were major goals of the conference.

"The ESOS legislation provides strong direction for the sector on their obligations regarding international students.

"In researching international student support systems of other Australian institutions for the purpose of implementing our own strategy, we quickly realised that experiences across the sector were very different.

"This inaugural conference is an important opportunity for the sector to share learnings and improve the international student experience across the country."
