The 2011 Margaret Senior Wildlife Illustration Award is held annually by the University to provide an outlet for students who are studying the Bachelor of Illustration (Natural History) program.

The University of Newcastle is the only institution to offer such a program in Australia and one of very few full degree courses of its type in the world.

Margaret Senior was one of Australia’s most prominent wildlife illustrators who died in 1995, leaving a bequest to the University to promote natural history.

University of Newcastle (UON) Foundation CEO Louise O’Connell said that Margaret’s bequest demonstrates how one person’s passion can live on through the next generations.

“Margaret’s gift has assisted more than 25 natural history illustration students since 1995, often contributing to students’ field work or art equipment and supplies.”

The prize is jointly funded by the late Margaret Senior and NSW Parks and Wildlife.

This year’s winner will be presented with a $1,000 prize by the Parks and Wildlife Group’s Visitor Experiences and Education Manager, Simon Stroud.

An exhibition of students work will be on show this week in the Design building.

Anyone interested in making a donation or bequest to the University can contact the UON Foundation on (02) 49217 453 or visit the website at www.newcastle.edu.au/foundation.

Photo opportunity: The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, August 30 at 11am in the Design building foyer, located next to the University Gallery at Callaghan Campus.
