Titanic tales of the deep from world-renowned microbiologist
The corrosion specialist involved in the study of the Titanic wreck will speak about biological deterioration at a public lecture in Newcastle tomorrow.
Since 1991, Dr Roy Cullimore has dived the Titanic wreck many times to determine the rates at which its iron frame is broken down through biological activity.
Dr Cullimore’s ongoing research centres on the deterioration of various deep sea wrecks and the effects of micro-organisms on creating rusticles (rusty masses of growing concrete), water wells and other forms of corrosion.
His presentation will describe microbiological influences including the latest testing technology and the durability of carbon, water and iron on structures.
Dr Cullimore is the founder and president of Canadian company Droycon Bioconcepts and former lecturer at the University of Surry,UK and University of Regina, Canada.
He is visiting Australia at the invitation of the Australasian Corrosion Association, the Centre for Infrastructure, Performance and Reliability and the University of Newcastle.
Dr Cullimore will speak on Tuesday, 16 August at the Engineers Australia Auditorium, 122 Parry Street, Newcastle West from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.This is a free event.
