Switch turned on for energy research hub
In a week dominated by discussion of sustainable energy, the Hunter’s leadership in clean energy research is being highlighted with the opening of the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER).
Funded with the assistance of a $30 million Australian Government grant, NIER is a flagship research centre with unrivalled opportunities to advance energy and minerals research.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Nicholas Saunders said NIER reaffirmed the Hunter region’s reputation as a national hub for energy research.
“The University is a leader in energy and resources research and NIER will further advance our work in clean energy production, energy efficiency and the minimisation of carbon emissions,” Professor Saunders said.
“The establishment of NIER ensures our research and development continues to align strategically with industry and the needs of the broader community.”
The NIER Governance Board will be announced at the launch, including the appointment of Dr Eileen Doyle from the Hunter Valley Research Foundation as Chair. Other members include Managing Director Ampcontrol, Geoff Lilliss, and Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Grierson MP.
NIER Director Alan Broadfoot said such high level support for the Institute underscored the value of NIER’s research agenda.
“The governance board comprises representatives from the energy and resources sectors, government, industry and higher education,” Dr Broadfoot said.
“Through this group, NIER has the support of the region’s leaders. Their role is pivotal in NIER’s position as the research institute of first choice for next generation technologies to lower carbon emissions and minimise energy consumption.”
NIER is located off Vale Street, Shortland, in the former BHP Billiton Newcastle Technology Centre (adjacent to Shortland Waters Golf Club).
