Newcastle trailblazer takes final bow
After shining the spotlight on some well-known Newcastle performers, University of Newcastle drama lecturer Professor Michael Ewans is ready to step away from the stage.
For his last performance, the respected teacher and director will restage the trailblazing drama Woyzeck, before retiring after more than two decades at the end of June.
“Written in 1837, Georg Buchner’s Woyzeck was the first tragedy of the common man and tells the story of a downtrodden soldier who is driven mad by apocalyptic visions,” Professor Ewans, said.
“I originally translated the play from German to English in 1982 and am excited this will be my finale with the University as it has profoundly influenced dramatists since it was first performed in 1913.”
Professor Ewans has helped steer the early careers of London-based opera singer Maria Okunev and founder and principal actor of Stooged Theatre Company, Carl Young.
Woyzeck will be performed at the Sandi Warren Performance Centre, Newcastle Grammar School Park Campus on the corner of Union Street and Parkway Avenue, Cooks Hill, from Wednesday 18 May to Saturday 21 May at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at the door.
