Student artists awarded inspirational travelling scholarship

Two up and coming young artists Abbey Cecil and Rachael Ireland have been named the 2011 winners of the Jennie Thomas Travelling Art Scholarship, one of the most hotly contested scholarships at the University of Newcastle.

Two up and coming young artists Abbey Cecil and Rachael Ireland have been named the 2011 winners of the Jennie Thomas Travelling Art Scholarship, one of the most hotly contested scholarships at the University of Newcastle.

The winners were announced at the launch of an exhibition at the University Gallery showcasing the six finalists’ artworks.

This scholarship is one of several supported by philanthropist Mrs Jennie Thomas AM. It provides Fine Art students with the opportunity to travel overseas to give them inspiration for their Honours year of study.

Abbey Cecil will travel to Canada or the UK to volunteer in hospital arts program, as her thesis aims to examine how the inclusion of art in hospitals benefits patients, visitors and staff.

Rachael Ireland plans to visit London with the financial support of her scholarship.

“My work draws on how British culture has developed within Australia. While in London I intend to participate in Australian Season, a series of exhibitions and events focusing on Australian art and culture.

Mrs Thomas said the scholarship was intended to give budding artists the chance to spend some time in an inspirational location, so they can learn from their new surroundings and give them access to the world of art.

“I look forward to witnessing the results of their newfound knowledge and skills.”

University of Newcastle (UON) Foundation CEO Louise O’Connell said that the bounds of Jennie’s generosity appeared to be limitless.

“Jennie has donated to many scholarships at the University and the outcomes of her generosity continue to make positive, life-changing differences for those students.

“Some of Jennie’s past scholars have gone on to forge very successful careers doing what they love and excel in.”
