University scholarships up for grabs for Hunter students
Students studying at the University of Newcastle are being encouraged to apply for a scholarship to help ease the financial burden of studying.
There are more than 150 scholarships on offer across a whole range of degrees and disciplines, for both new and continuing students. Some are worth many thousands of dollars.
University of Newcastle (UON) Foundation CEO Louise O’Connell said the scholarships assisted and encouraged students to succeed in their chosen field.
“I encourage all students who are attending the University of Newcastle to visit our scholarships website and check to see if you are eligible. You are not limited to how many you apply for.”
For example the Xstrata Coal Scholarships are worth $10,000 each, while the Doyles Creek Scholarship gives students $7,000 per year for three years.
There are also scholarships that provide an opportunity for students to travel overseas. The Eric Parker Fellowship sends an architecture student on a round the world trip to study architectural design, while the Jennie Thomas Travelling Art Scholarship allows an Honours student to travel internationally to study art.
A scholarship may also help relieve the burden for students that are facing financial disadvantage or hardship.
The Shaping Futures Scholarship and the Godfrey Tanner Scholarship are dedicated to helping disadvantaged students.
Indigenous students are also catered for, with a number of scholarships to assist Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders with their studies.
Students with sporting abilities can also apply, with dedicated sports scholarships.Scholarships for talented musical students are also available.
Scholarship winner Adam Keenan said a scholarship helped him pay for the cost associated with studying.
“My text books and field trips are expensive but my scholarship helps me pay for these expenses. It’s also recognition for all my hard work studying and will certainly go on my resume.”
Students can apply for scholarships via the University of Newcastle’s website at www.newcastle.edu.au/scholarships. Students are able to apply for scholarships until 31 March.
