Work on the $2.6 million upgrade of the Central Coast campus library began this month and when completed will meet student demand for more learning and meeting spaces.

Senior librarian Fatu Kigbo said the innovative design was driven by the results of a student survey.
“To work out what was needed most, we asked the students what they would like to see as part of their revitalised library and the plans and inclusions reflect the survey results,” Ms Kigbo said.

“One of the big changes the students are excited about is an improved 24-hour information common where they can access the library‟s computing facilities 24/7 during the semester.”

The library extension has been funded as part of the Australian Government‟s Better Universities Renewal Fund, and is one of five capital work projects on the Central Coast campus, valued at a total of $20 million.

“The idea of the design, which will open the library up to the campus main quadrangle, is to create a more inviting environment for students to study and meet. There will be more lounges and a cafe is planned for the second stage of the project, as well as additional „quiet areas‟ for students to study,” Ms Kigbo said.

“The extended library will house an additional 90 computers and with more wireless hotspots, students will be able to access the internet from wherever they are seated.

“There will be an additional four group study rooms, which will include the latest technology such as plasma television screens and projectors, needed for students to complete their group work or practice their presentations.”

Construction is expected to be completed by late April 2011.
