The Consul General of India, Mr Amit Dasgupta, will make a special visit to the University of Newcastle's Callaghan campus today to make a symbolic donation.

Mr Dasgupta will donate 65 Indian books, covering a range of topics from Indian economics, travel, politics and literature, to the University's Auchmuty Library.

"It is commonly said that India and Australia only have the Commonwealth, cricket and curry in common, however there is so much more. It is my hope that the books will form an Indian corner in the library for Indian and other students to use," he said.

"Universities, like the University of Newcastle, have made a significant effort to make Indian students feel at home on campus and this can only happen in the hands of friends."

"I see this as just the first step to further develop a strong relationship between the Indian community and the University of Newcastle."

Professor Kevin McConkey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Global Relations), said the Consul General's visit would continue to build on the positive relationship between the University and the Indian community.

"We are thrilled to accept this very kind donation from the Consul General and are delighted to welcome him to our campus," Professor McConkey said.
