A photographic exhibition depicting the diverse species of fungi found growing around the University of Newcastle's Callaghan campus has gone on display this week.

After the Mould, meet our Fungal Friends photographed by keen mycologist Gregg Heathcote from the University's Cultural Collections, is on display on Level 2 of Auchmuty Library during August and September 2010.

"Fungi are largely overlooked natural treasures that are vital to the eco-system. This exhibition features 74 different fungi species found on our bushland campus," Mr Heathcote said.

The exhibition has been dedicated to the late Sam Willis, an environmental science student who recently passed away.

An online collection of images featured in the exhibition can be seen on Facebook .
