University professor named in top 100 engineers
University of Newcastle Professor John Carter has been named one of Australia's 100 most influential engineers for 2010.
The Institution of Engineers Australia has included Professor Carter on its annual list, which celebrates engineers who have made significant contributions in the areas of industry, consulting, academia, politics and public service.
Professor Carter is Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University's Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment and has dedicated more than 30 years to the field of geotechnical engineering.
"I am honoured to be recognised alongside some of Australia's most respected and talented engineers, who have each achieved leadership roles in their selected industries," Professor Carter said.
"I have always had a passion for geology and mathematics and what I do combines both of these interests with practical outcomes.
"I develop models to be used in engineering predictions of ground behaviour, for example, whether a hillside is stable or whether you risk a landslide, whether a building will settle too much or within acceptable limits."
This latest merit adds to a long list of awards and achievements for Professor Carter, including being elected to the Fellowship of the prestigious Australian Academy of Science, named a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and his appointment as a Member in the Order of Australia.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Mike Calford, said the University was privileged to have an engineer of such high calibre leading the Faculty.
"Professor Carter is widely recognised for his achievements in the field of geotechnical engineering and this latest acknowledgement is further testament to his endless dedication to engineering academia and research," Professor Calford said.
"Being named among Australia's 100 most influential engineers for 2010 is a wonderful personal achievement for Professor Carter and great news for the University and the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment."
