The University of Newcastle is offering Central Coast high school students the opportunity to get a head start on their university studies.

Thirteen local students are enrolled in the University's Gifted and Talented program, which allows exceptional students to undertake first year university courses while attending school.

Semester one students are completing a visual programming course that introduces the key concepts involved in problem solving and computer programming.

Students are eligible for a credit transfer in most University of Newcastle degree programs when the course is completed.

Classes are held each week at Gosford High School.
