University Professor receives prestigious recognition for outstanding career achievement
The University of Newcastle's Professor Derek Smith has been recognised as an outstanding alumnus of James Cook University in Queensland.
As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, James Cook University has honoured 14 of its 35,000 alumni who have gone on to achieve outstanding careers in academia, business or community service.
A Professor of Occupational Health and Safety in the Faculty of Health, Professor Smith is Director of the WorkCover NSW Research Centre of Excellence (WRCE), based at the University's Central Coast campus.
The WRCE works in conjunction with WorkCover to provide excellence in research and research training for the prevention of workplace injury and disease.
Professor Smith graduated from James Cook University with degrees in public health and tropical medical science, and is an adjunct professor at the university.
