Newcastle student wins international energy competition
A University of Newcastle engineering student has returned to Australia following a major win in a global wind energy competition in Denmark.
Master of Philosophy (Electrical Engineering) student Chris Rowe joined with Josie Fung from the University of Toronto in Canada to beat a field of 40 finalists from 13 countries to win the Vestas Winnovation Challenge. Chris received $10,000 prize money towards a round-the-world trip and has been invited back to Denmark to meet Vestas' President of Technology R&D.
Vestas is a leading international manufacturer of wind turbines and the finalists were required to devise methods of making wind energy more cost-effective and subsequently more attractive.
Chris's winning concept involved creating a synergy between hydro-electric and wind-generated power.
Chris Rowe is available for interview via Kate Reid in Media and PR.
