New partnership opens theological education in Australia
The University of Newcastle and the Broken Bay Institute (BBI) have formed a new partnership to offer the richest suite of theological degree programs in Australia.
BBI is a specialist theological provider and the largest Catholic distance theological education provider in Australia.
Under the new partnership, BBI students will be able to obtain undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications from the University.
"This partnership provides an essential boost to theological education, which has sadly not been a recognised part of the regular higher education sector," Professor Terry Lovat, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Education and Arts, said.
"Theology has functioned without the resources and research base necessary for its healthy development, and universities have been deprived of one of the oldest and most respected disciplines.
"Through this partnership, the University and BBI will offer one of the most significant theological teaching programs in Australia."
BBI students will be able to study the existing Bachelor of Theology degree program or one of four new programs - Graduate Certificate in Theology, Diploma in Theology, Bachelor of Theology (Honours), or Master of Theology.
Dr Gerard Goldman, Director/Principal of the Broken Bay Institute, said the venture would open new windows for the study of theology.
"This is a very exciting time for BBI, as we work with the University of Newcastle in delivering through online, distance and regional face-to-face modes, the highest quality and comprehensive theological education programs in Australia.
"Our staff will now have the opportunity to work with the University on research projects and doctoral supervision, strengthening our capacity in both areas."
Professor Nick Saunders, Vice-Chancellor of the University, and Bishop David Walker, Bishop of Broken Bay, will sign the agreement tomorrow.
When: Friday 20 November, 5.30pm.
Where: Isabella Restaurant, the University of Newcastle Callaghan campus.
