Live news broadcasts, a chemistry magic show and soccer-playing robots will be some of highlights at the University of Newcastle's Info Day this weekend.

The Newcastle campus (at Callaghan) is opening its doors on Saturday 29 August from 10am - 3pm, giving potential students the chance to find out more about local study options.

"Whether you are in your final year of high school, changing career or furthering your education, Info Day is a great opportunity to find out more about what the campus has to offer," Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Services) Dr Sue Gould said.

"You can learn about full and part-time University degree programs, discuss options face-to-face with staff and students, and gather all the information you need to make an informed choice about your future.

"If it is further University study you are interested in, staff will also be on hand to talk about postgraduate options. Info Day is also a great opportunity for TAFE students to find out how they can use their qualifications to continue at the University."

Applications for admission into university degree programs for 2010 close on Wednesday 30 September 2009, and can only be made online via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) website.

To assist with online applications, the Shortland Union Student Hub will open from 10am - 2pm on Info Day. Staff will be on-hand to help with the application process.

Current Year 12 students who intend to apply for university on the day are reminded to bring their student number, UAC PIN, credit card plus a list of chosen courses.

Info Day aims to help potential students and their families get a feel for campus life.

"Visitors can chat one-on-one with staff and current students from the University. They can also attend presentations, take a tour of the campus facilities including labs, lecture theatres, on-campus accommodation, the library, The Forum Sports & Aquatic Centre and much more," Dr Gould said.

"We are also holding sessions about admissions and fees, and discussions on what first-year students can expect when they start their studies."
