University researcher appointed visiting professor in China
Central Coast-based University of Newcastle Professor Derek Smith has been appointed a Visiting Professor at the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University in China.
A world-leading occupational health and safety researcher, Professor Smith's appointment is the result of long-term research collaboration with the Third Teaching Hospital of Hebei Medical University in Shijiazhuang.
His research has investigated specific health and safety hazards in the Chinese health care workforce such as musculoskeletal disorders, occupational dermatoses and needle stick injuries; and broader issues including women's health, tobacco control and HIV.
"Being appointed a Visiting Professor at Hebei Medical University is a great honour and will enhance collaborative research opportunities between the University of Newcastle and our Chinese colleagues," Professor Smith said.
A Professor of Occupational Health and Safety in the School of Health Sciences, Professor Smith is Director of the WorkCover NSW Research Centre of Excellence, based at the University's Central Coast campus.
The position of Visiting Professor is generally appointed to a senior scholar who can contribute to and enrich an educational institution's intellectual and research endeavours.
