More than 200 University of Newcastle students completed a successful campaign bagging eight medals at the 2009 Eastern University Games last week.
The Games were hosted by Charles Sturt University in Bathurst and attracted more than 1,500 student athletes from 13 universities across New South Wales and ACT.
The Newcastle team built on its impressive results from last year's event to bring home two gold medals, three silver and three bronze medals from the 2009 event. A range of other top five and top ten finishes secured fifth place overall for the University of Newcastle team.
The Men's Hockey team went one better this year to secure the gold medal while the Ultimate Frisbee team improved its fourth placing in 2008 to take home the gold medal in 2009. Silver medals were picked up by the Women's Basketball, Mixed Netball and Women's Netball teams while the Men's Basketball, Women's Hockey and Lawn Bowls teams came away with bronze medals.
These medals were backed up by impressive top five finishes to the University's other Women's Hockey and Women's Netball teams.
The University of Newcastle also competed in Men's and Women's Football, Men's Volleyball and Women's Basketball.
