Dr Livingstone, we presume… Biennial book fair to open its doors
A fascinating review of the life and adventures of explorer Dr Livingstone, published in the 1870s, is one of the rare books available at the Friends of the University of Newcastle Book Fair early next month.
The 632 page collectors' item, compiled from a variety of sources, is beautifully bound in Morocco leather, has a full colour title page and many full page plates.
Other literary gems to be sold during the Fair's slow auction include:
- Twelve volumes of C.E.W Bean's Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918
- A 1939 edition of the Wizard of Oz, the only edition with the complete original text on which the movie was based
- A first edition of Ian Fleming's Dr No
- An illustrated edition of Ethel Turner's Gum Leaves printed around 1900
- A collectors' set of English Punch Magazines (1957 to 1992)
- Recollections of the Indigenous people of Port Stephens published in 1929
- A pictorial family Bible entered into the Library Congress at Washington in 1892.
It will be the 13th time the Friends of the University biennial book fair has been held.
Friends of the University President Vic Levi said more than one million books, magazines, records, cds and sheet music items covering the widest range of interest would go on sale when the Fair opened on Saturday 1 August at 10am.
Mr Levi said the slow auction of rarer books would be held on Saturday 8 August, the final day of the Fair.
"We have many items that cannot be found anywhere else and that is the big attraction of the Fair," he said.
Many thousands of other collectibles, including books on art, sport and cookery, biographies and children's fiction, will be on sale every day of the Fair.
There will also be a huge range of University, TAFE and school textbooks and thousands of magazines.
The Book Fair will be held in the Great Hall at the University's Callaghan campus from Saturday 1 August until Saturday 8 August.
It will open between 10am and 5pm on Saturdays and Sunday and 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. It will remain open till 7pm on Thursday.
