NUbots to defend title at RoboCup in Austria

The University of Newcastle's world-renowned NUbots are heading to Austria to compete in the 2009 RoboCup competition.

The University of Newcastle's world-renowned NUbots are heading to Austria to compete in the 2009 RoboCup competition.

Two-legged Aldebaran Nao robots will compete in the Standard Platform League and defend the title won last year in collaboration with the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

The Standard Platform League last year replaced the Four-Legged League, in which the NUbots reached international fame for their success with the soccer-playing robotic dogs.

In the Standard Platform League, the soccer game is played in 10 minute halves. Each team has three robots on the field - two field players and a goalkeeper.

This year's team comprises four PhD students from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Naomi Henderson, Steven Nicklin, Aaron Wong and Jason Kulk.

RoboCup 2009 will be held in Graz, Austria from 29 June - 5 July 2009. The NUbots will leave for Austria on Friday 26 June.

Picture opportunity: The NUbots are available for picture opportunities today (Wednesday 24 June 2009) between 11am and 3pm, at the Callaghan campus.
