New Darkinyung dictionary a first

The first grammar and language dictionary of the Darkinyung language will be launched at the University of Newcastle Central Coast campus next week.

The Darkinyung Language Group, a volunteer community group located on the Central Coast has been working with linguist Caroline Jones, Many Rivers Aboriginal Language Centre and Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-op for the past five years to publish the dictionary.

The book - Darkinyung grammar and dictionary: revitalising a language from historical sources - is authored by Caroline Jones.

The long-awaited publication means a great deal to the Darkinyung people as the language has not been spoken for many years and was believed to have been a lost language.

It will be used as an educational tool for schools and the community and is the first stepping stone of the revitalisation process.

The book will be launched at the University of Newcastle Central Coast campus on 15 of December at 5.30 in LT2 by Karen Jones, School Education Director for the Department of Education and Training Hunter Central Coast region.
