A new book by University of Newcastle lecturer Rod Noble will be launched in Newcastle this week, detailing the history and significance of the Labour movement in the city.

Of Human Right and Human Gain examines the roles of trade unions and political parties in shaping the Hunter Valley region, from the mid 1800s to the present day. It also discusses the involvement of the union movement - in particular Newcastle Trades Hall Council - in establishing the University of Newcastle.

The book contains 20 pages of historic photographs, many of which have never appeared in print before.

Of Human Right and Human Gain will be launched on Thursday 4 December 2008.
