The University of Newcastle is calling for volunteers to help with a highly successful reading program designed to increase young children's literacy.
Run by University's Family Action Centre, volunteers from the Rainbow Readers program meet at the Department of Housing Estate in Hamilton South each Wednesday. Volunteers take rainbow coloured picnic blankets and bags of books to the doorsteps of interested families in the estate and read to children aged up to 5 years.
Mel Burgess from the Family Action Centre said the success of the program meant they were now looking for more Rainbow Readers.
"We are also seeking volunteers to expand a similar, existing program that is run in conjunction with the Port Stephens Library," Ms Burgess said.
The next volunteer preparation course will be held at Hamilton South and run over three Thursdays (20 and 27 November and 4 December) from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
