Thinking Mathematically: Maths and Numeracy Support Across Disciplines

The guest speaker is Dr Mary Coupland, Director of Mathematics and ICT Study Centre at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).

As part of the Centre for Teaching and Learning's contribution to the provision of maths and numeracy support across the University, they would like to invite all University of Newcastle staff to "Thinking Mathematically: Maths and Numeracy Support Across Disciplines" on Friday, October 31, from 9am to 12 noon in the Treehouse on the Callaghan campus.

This is an excellent opportunity to hear and ask questions of colleagues who have been working in the maths field, in peer assisted learning and in the wider field of maths education. Attendees will also get the most up to date information about the University of Newcastle's own maths diagnostic test and what it tells us about our own students.

The guest speaker is Dr Mary Coupland, Director of Mathematics and ICT Study Centre at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Dr Coupland will address what it means to think mathematically and provide insight into the process of renewal which has occurred at UTS. Dr Coupland will also discuss the provision of tailored mathematical support programs for students across different faculties.

Dr Coupland's presentation will be followed by some local input from our own colleagues and a panel of speakers including Philip Dawson, from the University of Wollongong. Philip brings the perspective of a PHD student as well as several years as a computer science PASS (Peer Assisted Student Support) leader. He is a joint recipient of an Australian Learning and Teaching Council (formerly Carrick) Citation for that work and is also an editor of a new journal, the Australasian Journal of Peer Learning.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided. As places in this forum are limited, please register your interest to Donna Reedy by October 24, 2008.
