Campus 'runs off' with latest environment initiative
The University of Newcastle Central Coast campus is further boosting its environmental efforts by installing new water tanks as part of a unique community partnership.
Twelve new tanks have been installed around the campus to take advantage of rain water run-off and to conserve precious water resources.
The tanks have a combined capacity of 125, 000 litres and they should reduce water consumption on the campus by 1.5 to 2 mega litres per year, or between 10 and 15 per cent.
Water collected from the tanks will be used in campus rest room facilities and gardens, and by horticulture students to maintain their plots.
Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of the Central Coast campus, Professor Stephen Crump, thanked the Central Coast Community Environmental Network (CEN) for initiating the project.
"The University was approached by CEN after it secured an Australian Water Grant and we jumped at the chance to get involved in the project," Professor Crump said.
"The University takes its environmental responsibilities seriously and this is the latest in a number of steps to reduce our carbon footprint and impact on our natural surrounds."
The CEN lead the project with in-kind support from the University. Wyong Council provided $5,000 towards the cost of the water tanks and they were installed by a Work for the Dole team.
Formfit Services Limited supplied the water tanks and Nick Shine Plumbing assisted with the installation.
CEN Chairman John Asquith said the Central Coast campus is a role model in sustainability in the region.
"The campus location, grounds and building design lends itself well to being a leader in sustainability in the Central Coast region," Mr Asquith said.
"Installation of the water tanks is demonstration of a partnership to improve sustainability between government, non-government and the private sector, and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved."
The new water tanks will be officially unveiled on Monday 29 September at 10.30am.
