Understanding Cancer Biology and Improving Human Outcomes through Clinical Trials

Leading breast cancer researcher Professor John Forbes will discuss in a public lecture this week how information-based approaches can improve outcomes for cancer sufferers.

Leading breast cancer researcher Professor John Forbes will discuss in a public lecture this week how information-based approaches can improve outcomes for cancer sufferers.

His address is a highlight of the Winter School in Mathematics and Computational Biology, organised by the University of Newcastle's Priority Research Centre for Bioinformatics, Biomarker Discovery and Information-Based Medicine.

The importance of mathematics in health industry research, which Professor Forbes will be addressing in his presentation, is one of the key themes of the Winter School.

Professor Forbes' presentation will consider how the research process in clinical trials ensures that results are reliable, interpretable and relevant for understanding the biology of cancer and improving outcomes for patients.

In addition, he will discuss how clinical trials research has contributed to a decline in death rates from breast cancer and understanding of its biology.

Professor Forbes is Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Newcastle and Director, Department of Surgical Oncology at the Calvary Mater Newcastle. He is also Director of Research for the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZ BCTG) and a member of the Hunter Medical Research Institute's Cancer Research Program.
