Chamber Choir on song

The award-winning Chamber Choir took on Powderfinger's These Days and U2's With or Without You in last night's heat of the new television series competition.

The University of Newcastle's Chamber Choir has sung its way through to the quarter finals of Prime's Battle Of The Choirs.

The award-winning Chamber Choir took on Powderfinger's These Days and U2's With or Without You in last night's heat of the new television series competition.

The Choir pulled out their battle tune - Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell - to impress the judges and move through to the next round.

Choir Conductor Mr Philip Matthias said the ensemble was thrilled to have made it into the next round of the competition.

"This is a tough competition against the nation's best choirs. We have moved away from our classical roots to take on the challenge of performing rock music."

The choirs are judged on their technical ability, cohesion, presentation and entertainment value. At the end of the knock-out competition, the winning choir will receive $100,000 and a recording deal with Universal Music.

Battle Of The Choirs airs on Prime at 7.30pm on Sundays. The University of Newcastle’s Chamber Choir will appear on Sunday 13 July 2008.
