Eight art students will this week vie for the prestigious Brian and Rohma Cummins Awards.

Thirty-five works by the painting and drawing students are currently on display in The University Gallery in the lead-up to the awards presentation this Friday 4 July 2008.

Art Curator, Ms Gillean Shaw, said a $1000 cheque would be presented to both the winner of the drawing and the painting sections of the competition.

Dr Brian Cummins established the awards in 2005, after completing a PhD in Fine Art. The award provides incentive for the development of painting and drawing skills, which Dr Cummins sees as the foundation of all art practice.

The works will be exhibited in The University Gallery, Newcastle campus until Friday 11 July 2008. The Gallery is open Wednesday to Friday from 2 - 6pm and Saturday from 2pm - 5pm.
