Creating a piece of history - 2008 sculpture competition
In celebration of 20 years of teaching and learning, a unique sculpture will be created and take pride of place at the University of Newcastle Central Coast campus.
Artists are invited to submit a design proposal for an outdoor sculpture reflecting the history and the future of the campus.
The inaugural sculpture competition provides an opportunity for artists to reflect on the diverse nature of the campus and its place in the community.
Dr Sean Lowry from the University's School of Drama, Fine Arts and Music said the winning design proposal would be brought to life and permanently on display.
"The aim of the project is to capture the history and the 21st Century aspirations of the Central Coast campus," Dr Lowry said.
"The sculpture design should reflect the symbolic, metaphorical, architectural, cultural or historical nature of the campus location at Ourimbah.
"Emphasis will be placed on the strength of the creative idea for the sculpture and its suitability for permanent placement outside the Fine Arts centre.
"Artists are encouraged to think as laterally and creatively as possible within the existing architecture of the site."
The winning entry will be determined on the strength of the concept, proposal and the design, with $3,000 on offer to build the sculpture.
Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director, Central Coast campus, Professor Stephen Crump, said the sculpture competition kicked off what would be a year of celebration.
"Next year marks the 20th anniversary of teaching and learning on the Central Coast campus," Professor Crump said.
"From the outset the campus developed a distinctive character through the collaboration with TAFE-NSW and the Central Coast Community College - a partnership that has broadened and deepened over the past two decades.
"The campus continues to prosper, with a number of exciting new teaching and learning spaces on schedule to open in the coming years."
Design submissions will be open until Monday 13 October 2008 and the winner will be announced in early November. The winning work will be in place ready for the start of the 2009 academic year.
