Artists are invited to submit design proposals for an outdoor, site-specific sculpture that reflects both the history and 21st Century aspirations of the University of Newcastle Central Coast campus (Ourimbah).

Emphasis will be placed on the strength of the idea and its suitability for the intended site. The work should reflect in at least one respect, either allegorically, metaphorically, architecturally, culturally or historically, its intended location on the campus at Ourimbah.

The final design for the work may include 'readymade' and/or handmade materials. The winner will be determined on the strength of the concept, proposal and design alone. Artists are encouraged to think about the word 'sculpture' in the broadest sense, to remember that we live in a world filled to breaking point with cheap materials that will outlive us, and that certain parts of the architecture of the site are unfinished.

The specific site designated for the winning design is "anywhere that does not interrupt pedestrian traffic or present a hazard within the open space between buildings FA, EC and LT1". Please refer to the campus map (PDF).

Artists are encouraged to think as laterally and creatively as possible within the existing architecture of the intended site and budget. Artists may wish to consider the Central Coast region's indigenous history and/or culture. Given that emphasis is placed upon the creative use of durable every-day or ready-made materials, artists are specifically encouraged to allocate a minimum of the $3,000 prize budget within their design in order to maintain a reasonable profit. As a consequence, construction and installation costs within the $3,000 budget will be met by the University, with the remaining balance paid directly to the winning artist upon completion of the workPro Vice-Chancellor and Director, Central Coast campus, Professor Stephen Crump and Dr Sean Lowry from the School of Drama, Fine Arts and Music, together with Helen Hyatt-Johnston, General Manager of Art Space Sydney, will judge the final proposal/designs. The winner will be announced at 8pm on Friday November 7, 2008, at "The Grotto", a showcase of student works and performances held on the first Friday of every month in the Fine Arts Drama Theatre at the Central Coast campus. The winning work should then be constructed and installed prior to commencement of semester 1 in February 2009.
