NBN News will take viewers inside the research laboratory this week, and will even let them look through the microscope, in a special five part series on health and medical research in the Hunter.

The series will feature researchers from the University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Health and Calvary Mater Newcastle who work in collaboration with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).

The series will explore research into:

  • the causes of respiratory infection in elite athletes and how Hunter research will help Australian athletes perform in the 2008 Beijing Olympics
  • glue ear, a chronic condition which results in hearing loss in children and can lead to speech and learning difficulties, and a parent's experience
  • clot busting drugs for stroke research and the story of a man who survived stroke
  • a new test which can determine when pregnant women are not going to deliver prematurely
  • new cancer drugs, and will give viewers a glimpse of cells through the microscope, and the unexpected beauty which researchers see each day

Tune into NBN at 6pm this week (from Monday June 9 to Friday June 13) to learn more about the wonderful work of Hunter researchers.

After the news each night, visit www.hmri.net.au for more information on each story.
