People interested in studying at the University of Newcastle could start their degree in less than two months, with applications for mid-year enrolment at the University now open.

Guaranteed entry in selected programs is available for students who have successfully completed one of the University's enabling programs - Open Foundation, Newstep and Yapug - and TAFE graduates with a completed Certificate III level or higher.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sue Gould, said the Guaranteed Entry Scheme offered students the opportunity to continue their studies and further their careers.

"Guaranteed entry is available for a number of degrees including nursing, teaching and science. This is the ideal opportunity to kick-start a career in disciplines seeking highly skilled graduates."

Dr Gould said mid-year entry meant that students did not need to wait until next year to start studying.

"Apply for the mid-year intake and you can get your degree underway from July," Dr Gould said.

To ensure people have all the information they need to make the right choice, the University is holding a series of information sessions:

  • Tuesday 20 May - Campus Central Cafeteria, Central Coast campus, 4pm - 6pm
  • Monday 26 May - Block A, Port Macquarie campus, 4pm - 6pm
  • Wednesday 28 May - Great Hall, Newcastle campus, 4pm - 6pm
Dr Gould said choosing one of the University's degrees was a stepping-stone to an exciting professional career.

"Data from the Australian Graduate Survey shows that 82 per cent of our bachelor degree graduates under 25 find jobs within four months of finishing their degree. This is above the national average."

Applications for mid-year entry close Friday 13 June 2008. Apply online at the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) website at www.uac.edu.au

Dr Gould is available for interview from 1pm - 2pm today, Monday 19 May 2008.
