Community invited to celebrate World Immunology Day
Hunter researchers are inviting the community to learn about the immune system - the human body's defence armour - at a celebration of World Immunology Day next week.
An Open Day on Tuesday 29 April will explore how research on the immune system can lead to prevention and improved treatments of infection, immunisation, asthma, cancer, autoimmune diseases and allergies.
Researchers from the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health will speak about their research into areas as diverse as autoimmunity, allergies, asthma, and middle ear infections in children.

10 - 10.20am: Associate Professor Phil Hansbro - Why is immunology so important?
10.20 - 10.50am: Dr Xiaosong Liu, the University of Queensland - Treating chronic viral infection by immunological methods to prevent cancer development.
10.50 - 11.10am: Prof Robert Clancy - Autoimmunity.
11.10 - 11.30am: Dr Rani Bhatia, The John Hunter Hospital - Allergies in childhood; eczema, food allergies.
11.30 - 11.50am: Dr Lisa Wood, the University of Newcastle & the Hunter Medical Research Institute - Inflammation and asthma.
11.50 - 12.05pm: Marline Squance, the University of Newcastle & the Hunter Medical Research Institute - Autoimmune Resource and Research Centre.
12.05 - 12.20pm: Sharron Hall, the University of Newcastle & the Hunter Medical Research Institute - Middle ear infections.
12.20 - 12.30pm: Summary.
12.30pm - 1pm: Lung function testing by Vanessa McDonald and poster presentations.
The Open Day will be held at the University's David Madison Building in Watt Street, Newcastle, from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday 29 April. Entry is free and no RSVP is required.
