Chancellor secured for new term
The University of Newcastle Council has today reappointed Professor Trevor Waring to the role of Chancellor for a four-year term.
The Chancellor provides leadership and guidance to the University Council and is responsible for ensuring the Council fulfills its obligations. The main responsibilities are to chair Council meetings, guide and mediate Council actions in relation to organisational priorities and governance, and represent the Council to external bodies and the community for the University.
Professor Waring took over the role on 1 May 2004, after being a member of the University Council since 1984, and Deputy Chancellor since 1997.
He said he was looking forward to continuing as Chancellor.
"The University is in the best shape I can remember. This is clearly due to the calibre of staff, led by a very able Vice-Chancellor and management team and a Council committed to the very best university it can develop for the region," he said.
Professor Waring is a clinical psychologist with almost 40 years experience working in the field of mental health.
He is a Conjoint Professor of Psychology at the University of Newcastle; a senior consultant clinical psychologist at the Lakeside Psychiatric Unit of Warners Bay Private Hospital; and a Director of the Australian Psychological Society.
He is also Chair of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and Chair of the Hunter New England Health Service's Medical Appointments Advisory Board. He was President of the NSW Psychologists Registration Board and Chair of the National Council of Psychologists Registration Boards for 14 years, retiring in November 2006.
Professor Waring has been in private practice for more than 25 years and was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2004 for his work in mental health and psychology.
