An Indigenous employment researcher at the University of Newcastle will this week be recognised with an Australia Day award from the National Council of Women NSW.

PhD student Mrs Sharlene Dyer will receive the $1000 award to support her Australian- first research into Indigenous employment strategies in the private sector.

Mrs Dyer said that through her research she hoped to develop a best practice model for Indigenous employment.

"For too long Indigenous people have relied on welfare or public sector jobs. If Australia is to move forward, it is extremely important that the private sector embrace Indigenous employment. This will help break welfare dependency by empowering Indigenous people to take charge of their own destinies."

The award, which is sponsored by The Office for Women, NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, provides assistance and encouragement to female students completing postgraduate degrees. Mrs Dyer will receive the award at a 'Celebrate Being An Australian' function hosted by the National Council of Women NSW in Sydney on Wednesday 23 January 2008.
