Local students test their ability to argue at annual debating day

Wednesday 28 November 2007

Sixteen teams from 11 local schools will descend on the University of Newcastle, Central Coast campus, tomorrow to battle it out in the annual high school debating day.

Debating topics as diverse as 'elections are a waste of time', 'good looks get you further than a good mind', 'our generation has the right set of values to meet the challenges of the 21st Century' and 'we cannot trust the scientist', the Year 7 and 8 students will go head-to-head throughout the day-long event.

High School Debating Day has been a regular feature on the University calendar since its inception in 2005.

Deborah O'Neill, from the School of Education, said the event gave students a great opportunity to hone their debating skills.

"Many kids do like to argue, especially with their parents, but being able to think critically about an issue, craft an argument and then clearly articulate your point of view is an important skill," Ms O'Neill said.

"The students are encouraged to have fun with debating, at the same time give careful thought to a range of interesting statements that reflect real-life conundrums.

"Debating day is also a great opportunity for the University to extend its links with local schools, and give high school students a taste of life on a university campus."

High School Debating Day will take place at the University of Newcastle, Central Coast campus, from 9am to 3.30pm on Thursday 29 November 2007.

Schools participating are:
St Edwards College Red, Brisbane Waters Secondary College, Wadalba Community School, Swansea High School, Central Coast Grammar, Gosford High School, Green Point Christian College, St Josephs Catholic College, MacKillop Catholic College, Tuggerah Lakes College and Narara Valley High School.
