Master plans to develop a 10 hectare site at Dyke Point on Newcastle's waterfront are among 34 major projects by final-year architecture students at the University of Newcastle, on display from tomorrow.

The '10,000 clicks' exhibition showcases the work of all fifth-year architecture students, who have spent the past year working with clients to develop plans for real sites in Australia and overseas.

Projects on display include plans for a museum in Malta; a wilderness lodge on the Clarence River, churches in Singapore and Sydney, an emergency response complex near Cowan, a monastry in the New England region, and a 'LiveSites' building connecting Newcastle's foreshore and Pacific Park.

The '10,000 clicks' exhibition also includes 'PortCity - Reclaiming the post industrial waterfront', an urban and architectural design project by 10 of the 34 students.

David Stafford, the Head of Architecture at the University, said the aim was to explore the potential for staged urban development of the site.

"We asked the students to dedicate about half of the site to public parkland, and the other half to developing a sustainable extension of the city centre along the waterfront," he said.

"Issues of density, ecological footprint, urban public transport, renewable energy generation and the maritime heritage of the working harbour were essential parts of the exercise.

"The students have been working with Newcastle Port Corporation, which has provided plans, technical reports and staff expertise."

The students have suggested a variety of uses for the Dyke Point site, including a bathhouse and wellness centre, a school of architecture, harbour markets and a cooking school, and a media centre.

All works will be exhibited at the Honeysuckle Boiler Workshops from tomorrow, Friday 16 November. The official opening will be held tomorrow at 6pm and the works will be on public exhibition on Saturday 17 November from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 18 November from 10am to 1pm. Entry is free.

The exhibition will also be in Sydney at CarriageWorks, 245 Wilson St, Eveleigh, with the official opening on Tuesday 27 November at 6pm and the works on public exhibition on Tuesday 27 November from 9am - 5pm and Wednesday 28 November from 9am - 1pm.

Media Centre project, by Bede Campbell. This project involved relocating the NBN Television Station to a more prominent site within Newcastle, Dyke Point. The development includes new facilities for NBN Television Pty Ltd as well as a cinema complex, a film production studio and a multi-media library. It also includes an operable pedestrian bridge from Honeysuckle to Dyke Point.
