An innovative social program for young African migrants will be recognised with a City of Newcastle Service award tonight.

Designed by the community and the University of Newcastle's Family Action Centre, the African Lions project develops the social and language skills of young African people by involving them in the sporting community.

The program of recreational activities, including basketball, futsal and drumming, provides opportunities for young African people in Newcastle to connect with the community and older African males and females who act as mentors and coaches.

The 2007 City of Newcastle Community Awards are designed to highlight and show appreciation of service, commitment, effort and achievement that makes a difference in the lives of Novocastrians and to celebrate community participation and community spirit.

The City of Newcastle Service Award is awarded to individuals, groups or organisations for a service to a specific group, locality of field of activity.

The Family Action Centre received funding for African Lions from The Foundation for Young Australians earlier this year.

The awards will be presented tonight (Wednesday 7 November 2007) at 6.30pm at Newcastle City Hall, King St, Newcastle.
