International marine experts to address public lecture

Two international marine experts from the University of Newcastle will present a free public lecture at the Central Coast campus this Friday 12 October.

Dr Geoff MacFarlane will discuss his research into the affects of chemicals on marine molluscs in his lecture titled 'Environmental estrogens and gender-bending molluscs.'

Estrogens are female sex hormones and their release into the marine environment can impact on the reproduction of organisms such as the feminisation of males.

Dr Margaret Platell is an international expert on the feeding and diets of fish.

Her research provides marine managers with information on the likely impacts of the by-catch of fish from marine ecosystems, and her lecture will focus on the diets of three large Western Australian fish.

The lecture will be followed by refreshments and the opportunity to meet the researchers.

The public lecture will be held on Friday 12 October at 6pm in Lecture Theatre 1 at the Central Coast campus of the University of Newcastle.
