Lecturer and student scoop journalism awards

Paul Scott and Nikki Wilson-Smith from the University of Newcastle have been recognised for excellence in their field with wins at the 40th annual Northern NSW Journalism Awards.

Paul Scott and Nikki Wilson-Smith from the University of Newcastle have been recognised for excellence in their field with wins at the 40th annual Northern NSW Journalism Awards.

The awards recognise outstanding journalism in print, television, radio, photography and online media.

Journalism lecturer Paul Scott took out the All Media category, winning Best Sport Feature Article for his story in Inside Sport magazine on ticket scalping.

Radio and journalism student, Nikki Wilson-Smith, won Best Radio Feature Series for Made from Sweat and Stone, a history of the Great North Road for 1233 ABC Newcastle.

Mr Scott said the support of the School of Design, Communication and Information Technology made it possible for teaching academics to maintain their links with professional practice.

"While the award demonstrates acknowledgement from industry professionals, the most important aspect of the award is that students see you putting into practice what you are conveying in classes and that you can demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for what you are teaching," he said.

Congratulations Paul and Nikki!
