Recent national attention on Nobby's Beach following the grounding of the Pasha Bulka has highlighted the case for National Heritage Listing of the entire site, according to a University of Newcastle Lecturer.

Dr Erik Eklund, Chair of the University of Newcastle's Coal River Working Party, said the way the Newcastle community responded to the grounding and salvage of the Pasha Bulka at Nobby's Beach was evidence of the importance of the historic site.

Earlier this year, the Coal River Working Party submitted a nomination to the Australian Government for National Heritage Listing of the Convict Lumberyards and the Coal River Precinct, which includes Nobby's Beach and the first convict coal mines at Signal Hill.
