Accounting scholarships on offer to rural students

The University of Newcastle is giving rural students a unique opportunity to boost their future careers in accounting thanks to a new scholarship.

Year 12 students living in the Tamworth, Port Macquarie and Great Lakes regions who are interested in studying accounting at the University of Newcastle in 2008 can apply for the scholarship now.

Associate Professor Jim Psaros from the Faculty of Business and Law said the scholarship had been established by Newcastle accounting firms Cutcher and Neale, Forsythes, Lawler Partners, and Prosperity Advisers to encourage students from these regions to undertake accounting studies.

"The University of Newcastle's excellent commerce degree program is recognised for its links to industry for students studying the accounting major," said Associate Professor Psaros.

"We are committed to providing students outside of Newcastle with the opportunity to obtain a scholarship and study accounting.

"The demand for accountants is high and will continue to increase in the coming years. A career in this industry offers exciting opportunities for employment both in Australia and overseas."

"A degree in accounting is one of the few qualifications which are directly transferable to other countries."

Applications for the scholarship, which is worth $2000 for one year, close on Friday 31 August 2007. A scholarship will be awarded to one student from each of the three regions - Tamworth, Port Macquarie and Great Lakes.
