The evolving nature of European Union will be the subject of a public lecture at the University of Newcastle. International speaker, Professor Jan Zielonka, will reflect on the 50 years since the founding of the Treaty of Rome, and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Professor Zielonka's research deals with the evolving nature of the European Union and the process of its eastward enlargement. He will discuss the origin, the shape and the implications of this new empire.

Professor Jan Zielonka is Professor of European Politics at the University of Oxford and Ralf Dahrendorf Fellow at St Antony's College. He is in Australia as the guest of the Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University and the Innovative Universities European Union Centre, of which Newcastle is a member.

Professor Zielonka will give a public lecture from 3pm to 4pm on Monday 21 May 2007 in the Purdue Room, Callaghan campus.
