Three Hunter region high school teachers will be recognised for their lasting positive impacts on the lives of students with an award from the University of Newcastle.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Kevin McConkey, said the Vice-Chancellor's School Teachers Awards highlighted the vital role teachers played in influencing students' choices.
"The awards were introduced by the University this year to highlight the role of teachers in the choices students make about their future, including a decision to come to university," he said.
"One of the greatest influences on student learning outcomes is quality teaching, and teachers deserve support and encouragement for their commitment to students.
"We asked students who completed their University studies in 2006 to nominate a teacher from their past who had a lasting and profound impact on their lives.
"Through that process we have found some truly inspiring local teachers who are well deserving of the award."
Deborah Falconer and Ian Atkinson from Cessnock High School, and Marilynne Gledhill from Whitebridge High, will be recognised during the graduation ceremonies of the students who nominated them.
They will each receive $5,000 in prize money and their schools will receive $2,000.
Nominations were received for teachers in non-government and government schools from students completing a range of degree programs.
The selection panel comprised University staff, one member from Convocation, three school Principals and three University students.
